Greg Loyd is a broadcast journalist who serves as a primary anchor at WGXA in Macon. You can catch him weeknights on WGXA News at 5 on FOX 24 and on WGXA News at 6 & 11 on ABC 16. He also produces a weekly feature segment based on agriculture called “On the Farm” that airs each Friday night at 5 pm on FOX 24 and 11 pm on ABC 16.
Prior to his current role in Macon, he worked at WRBL in Columbus for four and a half years. He anchored mornings and eventually took on the responsibilities of producing and anchoring the midday news, too.
He started his broadcast journalism career in 1997 after earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Media Communication from Florida State University and a journalism minor at Florida A&M University.
His first job after graduating college was with WALB in Albany. Greg worked as the Valdosta bureau reporter which he ran from his apartment, covering not only Lowndes County, but several surrounding counties.
In 1998, Greg started working at WFXL in Albany. He started reporting there, but eventually rose to weeknight co-anchor. At WFXL, Greg met Mercer Van Schoor who was paired with him to anchor the weeknight newscasts. The two became lifelong best friends as a result of their stop at WFXL.
After WFXL, Greg returned to graduate school. He earned a Master’s of English degree from Valdosta State University.
He taught college composition courses for a number of years at schools in Georgia and Florida. Greg says he loved teaching, but still wanted to do television.
His chance to return to broadcast journalism came in 2016. At the time, Mercer Van Schoor had started working at WRBL in Columbus. She introduced him to the managers who hired him as a reporter. Eventually the pair would reunite on the anchor desk each weekday morning.
In 2021, Greg moved to WGXA and Macon. He is really enjoying being a resident of Middle Georgia and continuing his work as a journalist.
